Great family-fun activities at Bluestone

August 20 - August 22

From fire starting with flint and steel to astronomy, water rockets to birdwatching and fishing, there are plenty of nature and heritage based activities to attend at Bluestone State Park. Jonathan Lipscomb in the naturalist and activities instructors. Unless indicated, activities are free to attend.

FRIDAY, August 20, 2021
4:30pm: Spoon Carving and Regional History
Join the park naturalist at the shelter behind the activities building to learn about the local history and some basic wood craft as I demonstrate how settlers would create traditional dinner ware. *ypp

6pm: Primitive Fire Starting
Ever wonder about how to start a fire without a lighter or match? Come to the shelter behind the activities building to learn the basics of flint and steel fire starting as we light the weekly campfire. *ypp

7-9pm: Weekly Camp Fire
Continue the evening at the shelter behind the activities building with a relaxing campfire. Come to relax, swap stories, watch the evening animals, or learn about the basics of campfire cooking.

9-10pm: Introduction to Astronomy
Finish the night in the field behind the activities building with an introduction to astronomy and telescopes. If the sky is clear it can be a breathtaking view. *ypp

SATURDAY, August 22, 2021
11am: Match and Water rockets
Meet at the picnic shelter to learn the basics of match and water rocketry. *ypp

1pm: Bird Watching and Binoculars
Meet at the fishing pier below the office to learn the basics of binoculars and watch the birds of the lake. *ypp

2pm: Boundary Trail Nature Hike
Naturalist Jonathan meets you at the activities building to embark on a nature hike along the Boundary Trail and back along the Big Pine and Turnpike Trails at Bluestone State Park. The trail length is about 4½ miles or moderate hiking. Long pants and closed toed shoes are strongly recommended.

6-8pm: Tie dye
Let’s tie dye! Meet behind the activities building to create a one of a kind tie dye tee shirt. Special Bluestone State Park shirts are $10 or bring your own for $5 exact change taken on site or you may pay beforehand at the office.

8-10pm: Let’s Go Fishing! Cat fishing!
Meet Jonathan the fishing pier below the office for a relaxing evening of cat fishing. Individuals over 15 need a valid fishing license. Licenses may be purchased at wvfish.com If you’ve never gone fishing, this is an excellent opportunity to get started. Flashlights are recommended. *ypp

SUNDAY, August 22, 2021
11am: GIANT Bubbles
This is such a fun activity! Join me at the pool house to create giant bubbles and learn the science of fluid films.

12pm: Kite Flying
Meet at the pool house to learn the basic of flying a kite *ypp

1pm: Stream Walk
We’ll meet at the office to take a trip to the creek to see what organisms we can find and learn about. Expect to have wet or muddy feet. *ypp

3:30pm: Riverview Trail Nature Hike
Let’s meet at the office to go on a nature hike along the River View Trail. Length ½-2½ miles. This is an easy-moderate hike. *ypp

6-8pm Tie Dye
Let’s tie dye! Meet behind the activities building to create a one of a kind tie dye tee shirt. Special Bluestone State Park shirts are $10 or bring your own for $5 exact change taken on site or you may pay beforehand at the office.
