Geology Rocks! at Canaan

July 22 - July 23

Geology! Rocks at Canaan Valley Resort on July 22 and July 23 with visiting geologist Jim Britton. Thursday, July 22, at 7:00 p.m. is an evening program in the Birch Room at Canaan Resort Lodge is an introduction to the Mountain state’s geology. On Friday, July 23, at 9:00 a.m., take a walk on the Blackwater River Trail located at the Golf Course parking lots for a guided hike on Canaan geology.

A state since 1863, West Virginia was millions of years in the making. The mineral wealth and natural beauty of West Virginia owe much to geologic processes that began eons ago. Without geological processes, there would be no rocks, rivers, coal, oil or gas, minerals, or scenic beauty. “Indeed, there would be no mountains in the Mountain State,” says survey geologist Jim Britton.

If you don’t know limestone from sandstone or granite from gravel, there are two activities to attend, the evening program where Jim explains and explores the mysteries of rock. The following morning, attendees roll out for a hike to learn about geology, topography and more.

The West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey folks are the experts presenting this program series. You can attend the evening slide show or morning activities, or both. A geology rocks patch is available to individuals attending while supplies last.
