Join park naturalist Jane Birdsong at these activities scheduled between June 12 and 16, 2019.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12
7:30 p.m. CAMPFIRE SONGS – Naturalist Jane brings her guitar to one of the campgrounds for some sing-alongs, requests, and WV songs.

THURSDAY, JUNE 13
11:00 a.m. TURTLE TIME Learn the 3 most common turtles in our part of West Virginia and how to help them cross the road safely. (YPP) Windy Gap Schoolyard (large pavilion if raining)

1:00 p.m. VERY FISHY – Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home, then feed the baby trout in our trout rearing pond (YPP) Meet naturalist Jane in Old Pavilion at 1:00 p.m.

4:00 p.m. ARCHERY – Learn the basics of target shooting, long shots, how to hold a bow, take aim and load arrows. (YPP) Archery range across from office.

FRIDAY, JUNE 14
11:00 a.m. Stream Search – Learn life cycles of insects, then search for their larvae under rocks in Laurel Fork. Examine these critters under magnifying lenses, learn which ones indicate clean, unpolluted streams. (YPP) Wear shoes that can get wet! Meet in Windy Gap Schoolyard.

4:00 p.m. ARCHERY – Learn the basics of target shooting, long shots, how to hold a bow, take aim and load arrows. (YPP) Archery range across from office.

SATURDAY, JUNE 15
10:00 a.m. HIGH ROCK TRAIL HIKE with Park Naturalist Jane (YPP) Bring snacks + water. Wear sturdy shoes. Walking stick or trek poles helpful. Meet naturalist on office porch at 9:45 a.m. (approx. 2 and ½ hrs.)

3:00 p.m. GREAT MIGRATION CHALLENGE (YPP) Experience the hazards birds must face as we play an interactive game in Windy Gap Schoolyard. Each “bird” rolls dice to “fly” to next rest stop. Will you make it to your summer home?

4:00 p.m. ARCHERY – Learn the basics of target shooting, long shots, how to hold a bow, take aim and load arrows. (YPP) Archery range across from office.

SUNDAY, JUNE 16
11:00 a.m. BATS – WHERE HAVE THEY GONE? (YPP) Learn about the white nose fungus killing many of our hibernating bat populations. Balli Pavilion

2:00 p.m. TREE ID WALK (YPP) Join our park naturalist for a short walk around the office area to identify the diversity of hardwoods and conifers in this Eastern Temperate Rainforest we call home. Meet at picnic table on office porch.

4:00 p.m. FATHER’S DAY SOFTBALL GAME – Sons & daughters, bring dad out to show his prowess at bat! Mitts, bats provided or bring your own. Ballfield past Campground 4.
