Fred “Powerhouse” Powers – The Appalachian Coal Story – Sundays @ 3p Series
August 5, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 8:04 pm
Coal Miner. Storyteller. Author. Teacher. Appalachian. Fred Powers is a walking repository of West Virginia and Appalachian history. Powers recalls the history of mining in America from its humble beginnings to its place today as a major energy source. Mining artifacts gathered throughout the coalfields helps illustrate the technological advances of mining. The Sunday program includes his insight on the dangers encountered underground as well as living creatures; black lung disease; rise of the labor unions to bring a fair wage to the working men of the pits. Mrs. Powers welcomes youngsters with games for coal camp children played and may speak of the role of women in the coal camps. Questions welcome and open conversation about places of interest to visit in West Virginia. Open to the public. No charge. A Sunday afternoon not to me missed. Location: Faulconer Room, 3:00 p.m.
