Explore Pipestem Weekend
February 21, 2019 @ 8:01 pm - February 23, 2019 @ 8:01 pm
Start the weekend Friday at 5:00 p.m. with “Pipestem: Where People and Nature Meet” with Naturalist Julie McQuade. Meet in the lodge lobby and learn about the history of Pipestem, including when and why the park was developed, what existed in the area before the park was developed and about the people that once called Pipestem home.
On Saturday, February 23 the Bald Eagle Caravan tour meets in the lobby of McKeever Lodge at 10:00 a.m. We’ll drive to Bluestone Lake to observe some of the local Bald Eagles and other waterfowl. Each family or participant will be required to drive their own vehicle. The drive to the lake will take about 20 minutes. There will be some binoculars available, but please bring your own if you have them. In the event of snow, this activity may have to be canceled. For more information contact the Naturalist at 304-466-1800 Ext. 379. (1 ½ – 2 hours)
At noon the Nature Hunt begins. Meet Julie in the parking lot of the Bolar Observation Tower for a nature scavenger hunt. We will have a list of things to find in nature. A prize will be given for finding them all. The view from the tower is awesome. Even if you don’t participate in the scavenger hunt, be sure to visit the tower when at Pipestem. (1/2 – 1 hour)
Lake Shore Walk meets in the lobby of McKeever Lodge at 2:00 p.m. This hike is along the Lakeshore Trail, and up the Cottage Trail to an overlook for an excellent view of the Bluestone Gorge. We will return to the lodge along the main road. (1 ½ – 2 hours)
Sunday, February 24 is a 10:00 a.m. Bird Walk from the parking lot of the Par 3 Golf Course. McQuade is an avid birder and welcomes anyone interested in learning and looking for the feathered friends of Pipestem. We’ll have some binoculars to borrow. All birding skill levels encouraged to join us outdoors for mid-morning bird watching.Book Now
