Climax Engine No. 9 Weekend at Cass
November 2, 2019 @ 1:01 am - November 3, 2019 @ 1:01 am
This special rail fan weekend is a big event with the Climax Locomotive featured.
The Climax engine has been a collaborative project of West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the Mountain State Historical Railroad and Logging Association, and the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad.
In November eighteen years ago a derelict Climax locomotive was rolled into the restoration shop at the Cass Scenic Railroad. On Thursday, September 5, 2019, at 10:54 a.m., the throttle was opened, steam flowed, and Climax No. 9 propelled herself forward for the first time in 60 years.
The 100-year-old locomotive had been used and abused throughout its life at the Moore Keppel Co. in Ellamore, WV, involved in a rear-end collision towards the end of its operating life in the 1950s and survived a shop fire during its first attempt at restoration in 1972. November 2nd and 3rd will be the second welcoming of this locomotive to the Cass Fleet. Trains Magazine and other media will be present throughout the weekend.
