Cacapon Outdoor Activities

When visiting Cacapon, enjoy these programs and experiences during your visit or stay. All programs and activities begin at the Campfire Circle near the Nature Center unless noted**. The Nature Center is typically open from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily. Most programs are one hour in length and begin at the nature center or campfire circle. Activity flier is posted at the nature center.

10:00 a.m. Wildflower Meadow Walk
Learn all about the park’s native wildflowers and pollinators. YPP

1:00 p.m. Magnificent Monarchs
Let’s explore the milkweed flowers and see what we find. Learn about the amazing monarchs! (1 hour) YPP

10:30 a.m. Monarch Study
Help conduct a field survey on flowering plants at the park’s monarch way stations. The information is recorded for Monarch Joint Venture as a nationwide assessment for monarchs. All ages welcome! Bring bug spray, sunscreen, & sturdy shoes, long pants recommended. Earn a monarch scout patch!

1:30 p.m. Fishing 101
Meet at the Nature Center, then head out to the lake! Learn how to tie a fishing hook, then cast out! Limited fishing poles & worms provided or bring your own. (1 hour) YPP

3:00 p.m. Magnificent Monarchs

7:00 p.m. Evening Hike on the Laurel Trail
*Meet at the Nature Center. Take in some evening views and sounds. 2 miles

10:00 a.m. Orienteering 101
Learn the basic use of a compass on our new course! YPP

1:30 p.m. Cacapon Tie-Dye
Join us at the Nature Center for a fun afternoon of tie-dying! Make this a State Park tradition & take home your own park tie-dye T-shirt! ***State Park T-shirts sold at Nature Center. $10.00 will cover T-shirt & dye.

5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Cruise-In
If you enjoy antique cars, stop by the Old Inn parking anytime during these hours.

7:30 p.m. Cacapon Campfire
Meet at the campfire circle beside the Nature Center for a marshmallow roastin’ good time by the fire. You bring the marshmallows & we will provide the sticks.

8:30 p.m. Moth Study
It’s National Moth Week! Sheets with black lights will be attracting a variety of moths, outside the Nature Center. Wrap up by 10:00 p.m.

Meet at the Nature Center for a short hike. Let’s learn who is making all that noise! (1 hour) YPP

Young People for Parks
YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated on the weekly program by the YPP logo. Participants will also complete the information on a special YPP brochure. After turning it into the park’s naturalist, each participant will receive a state park incentive for participating in three specified programs. All ages are welcome!

Nature Center operations and programs are following recommended social distancing guidelines established by the governor of 6’ apart and maximum gathering of 25. Programs will be first come, first served. Please wear masks when indoors. Let’s all have a fun & safe summer together!
