Cacapon Outdoor Activities

When visiting Cacapon, enjoy these programs and experiences during your visit or stay. All programs and activities begin at the Campfire Circle near the Nature Center unless noted. The Nature Center is typically open from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily. Most programs are one hour in length and begin at the nature center or campfire circle. Activity flier is posted at the nature center.

10:30 a.m. Nonnative Invasive Plants
Learn about several of Cacapon’s natural threats and management practices of several invasive plants….oriental bittersweet and Japanese barberry. Learn what not to plant in your landscape.
1:30 p.m. History Walk
Take a stroll through the lower lake area to learn about the Civilian Conservation Corps and their time here.

10:30 a.m. Reduce, reuse, recycle Crafting
Join special guest naturalist Susan Parker with the DEP Youth Environmental program to make some fun wildlife crafts on snakes & box turtles at the nature center.
1:30 p.m. Stream Study
Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! Meet at Nature Center. You may want to bring shoes to get wet. YPP
3:30 p.m. Magnificent Monarchs
Let’s explore the milkweed flowers and see what we find. Learn about the amazing monarchs! (1 hour) YPP
7:00 p.m. Evening Hike on the Laurel Trail
*Meet at the Nature Center. Take in some evening views and sounds. 2 miles
Young People for Parks
YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated on the weekly program by the YPP logo. Participants will also complete the information on a special YPP brochure. After turning it into the park’s naturalist, each participant will receive a state park incentive for participating in three specified programs. All ages are welcome!
Nature Center operations and programs are following recommended social distancing guidelines established by the governor of 6’ apart and maximum gathering of 25. Programs will be first come, first served. Please wear masks when indoors. Let’s all have a fun & safe summer together!
