Cacapon Outdoor Activities

When visiting Cacapon, enjoy these programs and experiences during your visit or stay. All programs and activities begin at the Campfire Circle near the Nature Center unless noted**. The Nature Center is typically open from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily. Most programs are one hour in length.

Friday, July 10

  • 10:30 a.m. Fishing 101
    Meet at the Nature Center, then head out to the lake! Learn how to tie a fishing hook, then cast out! Limited fishing poles & worms provided or bring your own. (1 hour) YPP
  • 1:30 p.m. Knot-Tying 101
    Learn how to tie three common knots followed by an activity. YPP
  • 7 p.m. Evening Hike on the Laurel Trail
    *Meet at the Nature Center. Takes in some evening views and sounds. 2 miles

Saturday, July 11

  • 10:30 a.m. Life on the Appalachian Trail
    Join the summer naturalist and discover what it takes to hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia over 2,000 miles.
  • 1:30 p.m. Stream Study
    Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! Meet at Nature Center. You may want to bring shoes to get wet. YPP
  • 3 p.m. WV Furbearers
    Learn about a variety of mammals and experience firsthand what their fur feels like.
  • 6:30-8:30 p.m. Dutch Oven Cooking
    Join a park volunteer at the campfire circle to learn the history, techniques, & sample some BBQ and desserts!

Sunday, July 12

  • 10:30 a.m. Discovery Walk
    So much to discover! Use the Young People’s Series Wildlife Guide & Checklist to find birds, mammals, reptiles & amphibians! YPP
  • 1:30 p.m. Stream Study
    Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! Meet at Nature Center. You may want to bring shoes to get wet. YPP
  • 3 p.m. Knot-Tying 101
    Learn how to tie three common knots followed by an activity. YPP

Young People for Parks
YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated on the weekly program by the YPP logo. Participants will also complete the information on a special YPP brochure. After turning it into the park’s naturalist, each participant will receive a state park incentive for participating in three specified programs. All ages are welcome!

Nature Center operations and programs are following recommended social distancing guidelines. Visitors are asked to stay six feet apart and gatherings are limited to 25. Programs will be first come, first served. Let’s all have a fun & safe summer together!
