Cacapon Outdoor Activities

When visiting Cacapon, enjoy these programs and experiences during your visit or stay. All programs and activities begin at the Campfire Circle near the Nature Center unless noted. The Nature Center is typically open from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily. Most programs are one hour in length.

Monday, July 13

10:00 a.m. Tai Chi
This class will help increase balance, flexibility, and focus on connection to mind, body, & spirit. Gazebo Area (1 hour)

10:30 a.m. Orienteering 101
Learn the basic use of a compass on our new course! YPP

1:30 p.m. Stream Study
Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! Meet at Nature Center. You may want to bring shoes to get wet. YPP

3:30 p.m. Knot-Tying 101
Learn how to tie three common knots followed by an activity. YPP

Tuesday, July 14

10:30 a.m. Orienteering 101
Learn the basic use of a compass on our new course! YPP

1:30 p.m. Box Turtle Game
Learn how you can help save the eastern box turtles while playing a fun game! Family friendly!! YPP

3:30 p.m. Leave No Trace on the Trail
Learn about LNT principles for all types of hiking followed by a short hike. YPP

Wednesday, July 15

10:30 a.m. WV Song Birds
Learn to identify common birds by sight & sound. Use the Young People’s Series Bird guide & checklist. Followed by a hike & craft. (1 hour) YPP

1:30 p.m. Magnificent Monarchs
Let’s explore the milkweed flowers and see what we find. Learn about the amazing monarchs! YPP

Thursday, July 16

10:30 a.m. Nonnative Invasive Plants
Learn about several of Cacapon’s natural threats and management practices of several invasive plants….oriental bittersweet and Japanese barberry.

1:30 p.m. WV Furbearers
Learn about a variety of mammals and experience firsthand what their fur feels like. YPP

Young People for Parks
YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated on the weekly program by the YPP logo. Participants will also complete the information on a special YPP brochure. After turning it into the park’s naturalist, each participant will receive a state park incentive for participating in three specified programs. All ages are welcome!

Nature Center operations and programs are following recommended social distancing guidelines established by the governor of 6’ apart and maximum gathering of 25. Programs will be first come, first served. Let’s all have a fun & safe summer together!
