Cacapon Outdoor Activities

Cacapon invites you to enjoy programs and experiences during your visit or stay. All planned activities begin at the Campfire Circle near the Nature Center unless noted**. The Nature Center is typically open from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily. Most programs are one hour in length and begin at the nature center or campfire circle. The activity flier is posted at the nature center.

10:30 a.m. Monarch Study
How many monarch butterflies do you see? Let’s take an official survey for Monarch Joint Venture while walking around one of the park’s wildflower fields. Earn a monarch scout patch! YPP

1:30 p.m. Stream Study
Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! Meet at Nature Center. You may want to bring shoes to get wet. YPP

3:00 p.m. History Walk
Take a stroll through the lower lake area to learn about the Civilian Conservation Corps and their time here.

7:00 p.m. Evening Hike on the Laurel Trail
*Meet at the Nature Center. Take in some evening views and sounds. Great views along the trail along with views of the upper reservoir. 2.5 miles

10:30 a.m. Knot-Tying 101
Learn how to tie three common knots followed by activity. YPP

1:30 p.m. Cacapon Tie-Dye
Join us at the Nature Center for a fun afternoon of tie-dying! Make this a State Park tradition & take home your own park tie-dye T-shirt! ***State Park T-shirts sold at Nature Center. $10.00 will cover T-shirt & dye.

3:00 p.m. Magnificent Monarchs
Let’s explore the milkweed flowers and see what we find. Learn about the amazing monarchs! (1 hour) YPP

7:00 p.m. Irish Road Bowling
Join in this fun competitive game of rolling a cannon ball around a course & see what the fun is all about. Who will be the winner?

8:30 p.m. Cacapon Campfire
Meet at the campfire circle beside the Nature Center for a marshmallow roastin’ good time by the fire. You bring the marshmallows & we will provide the sticks! Sing some campfire songs!

Monday, September 7, 2020 – Happy Labor Day!

10:00 a.m. Ridge Trail Ramble
Let’s take a hike and discover what’s in bloom and take in a great view! (1 hour) YPP

3:00 p.m. Box Turtle Game
Learn how you can help save the eastern box turtles while playing a fun game! YPP

Young People for Parks
YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated on the weekly program by the YPP logo. Participants will also complete the information on a special YPP brochure. After turning it in to the park’s naturalist, each participant will receive a state park incentive for participating in three specified programs. All ages are welcome!

Nature Center operations and programs are following recommended social distancing guidelines established by the governor of 6’ apart and maximum gathering of 25. Programs will be first come, first served. Please wear masks when indoors. Let’s all have a fun & safe summer together!
