Cacapon Homecoming and more: Cacapon

A few late flutters of the Monarch butterfly may be passing through and there are more activities that welcome fall colors of the West Virginia hills. Join Naturalist Valerie Chaney, Allen Miller and volunteers for these activities.

FRIDAY, September 29, 2023

Best Activity Ever!
10:00AM Paddle Boat Tour
Join the park naturalists for an interpretive talk on the park’s natural and cultural history on the lake. $6 per person. Meet at the Boat Dock, near the boat dock parking area.

1:00PM Corn Moon Campfire
September is the month for the Harvest Moon also known as the Corn Moon. Enjoy a sample of the corn cooked over the fire.

10:00AM Discovery Walk
Join our park naturalists to discover nature’s secrets. Fall leaves are starting to turn and fall wildflowers are blooming. Let’s go explore!

12:00PM-2:00PM Tread Lightly Litter Clean Up
This is the annual WV Tread Lightly day aimed at keeping our beautiful state and parks clean. Meet at the nature center.

2:30PM Monarch Migration & Tagging
Learn all about the importance of a monarch way station and take a tour. Followed by a trip to one of the park’s many wildflower meadows known as our pollinator zone to discover adult monarchs on their long migration to Mexico. A monarch survey and tagging will be demonstrated.

Cacapon Homecoming 12:30PM-5PM
Park Gazebo & Picnic Area

Celebrate our Camp Morgan CCC boys, Civilian Conservation Corps, who built the park 1934-41’. The Cacapon Resort State Park Foundation will have live music, silent auction, food, 50/50 raffle, & door prizes.

* Stop in the Nature Center for more information and pictures on the CCC boys of
Camp Morgan. Displays of local men including Galen Funk, a stone mason and George Beam photos and the 2021 interview of his 6 month enlistment in Camp Morgan when he was just seventeen.

* A 30 minute film of the “CC Boys” will be shown upon request. This shows their work here at Cacapon and other West Virginia State Parks and Forests.

Come and visit the Tom Ambrose Nature Center at Cacapon Resort State Park! The nature center is a great stop for all ages, showcasing exhibits on the park history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41. Other West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy collection of wildlife- fish, birds, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, elk, and eastern grey wolf! Also, hands-on sand displays for wildlife tracks and a new geology interactive map to design your own mountains, rivers and lakes. Take a park naturalist guided hike or join the daily activities!
