Bluestone State Park Activities
Nature-based activities at Bluestone State Park welcome youth and families. Unless indicated otherwise, participation is free. Jonathan Lipscomb is the park naturalist and conducts these planned activities.

Tuesday, July 27, 2021

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
LET’S GO FISHING!
Meet fishing pier below the office for a relaxing morning of fishing. Individuals over 15 need a valid fishing license. Licenses may be purchased at wvfish.com. *YPP

2:30 p.m.
NATURE HIKE
Join Naturalist Jonathan at the Bluestone State Park activities building for a nature hike along the Rhododendron and Cabin Trails. Length 1.5 miles. Difficulty: easy to moderate. Long pants and closed-toe shoes recommended. *YPP

MATCH AND WATER ROCKETS
Meet at the picnic shelter to learn the basics of match and water rocketry. *YPP

3:00 p.m.
LEAF IMPRESSION
Meet outside behind the activities building to explore the local flora and create leaf impressions to take home. *YPP

4:00 p.m.
NATURE HIKE
Find everyone in front of the activities building for a stroll along the Turnpike and Cabin trails. Difficulty: easy; Length: 1.5 miles. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are recommended. *YPP

SPOON CARVING AND REGIONAL HISTORY
Naturalist Jonathan meets you at the shelter behind the Bluestone State Park activities building to learn about the local history in Mercer/Summers County and some basic heritage wood craft. Lipscomb demonstrates how settlers would create traditional dinner ware. *YPP

6:00 p.m.
PRIMITIVE FIRE STARTING
Ever wonder about how to start a fire without a lighter or match? Come to the shelter behind the activities building to learn the basics of flint and steel fire starting as we light the weekly campfire. *YPP

7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
WEEKLY CAMPFIRE TIME!
Continue the evening at the shelter behind the Bluestone State Park activities building with a relaxing campfire. Come to relax, swap stories, watch the evening animals, or learn about the basics of campfire cooking.

9:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
INTRODUCTION TO ASTRONOMY
We will finish the night in the field behind the activities building with an introduction to astronomy and telescopes. *YPP
