Blackwater Falls WV Weekend

Getting outdoors on West Virginia Day weekend finds a variety of activities to enjoy at Blackwater Falls State Park. Unless indicated activities are held at the nature center area.

THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2020

Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Craft of Day is Paracord – 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Learn how to make a bracelet with paracord. Craft fee is $4.00

10:30 a.m. North Woods Walk
This walk begins at the Sled Run Fire Circle for an introduction into a northern hardwood forest. About 70 minutes, 1 mile. YPP

1:00 p.m. Nature Writing Retreat
Gather at Pendleton Point Overlook to sit back and relax in an hour long program. Inza will give inspiration on finding tranquility while expressing one’s self through writing about nature. Use the serenity of the area to find your inspiration. Please, bring a blanket or towel to sit on and paper and pencil. Little walking. YPP

4:00 p.m. Wearing Your Vegetables
Experience using natural plant material to tie dye a shirt. Shirt sizes limited to first come basis or bring your own. $10.00 per Adult Size T-shirt, $8.00 per Youth Size T-shirt in the Nature Store. Materials used include beets, spinach, turmeric and red cabbage. About one hour. Little Walking. YPP

FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 2020

Nature Center Open: 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Craft of Day is Pet Rock. Visit anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to create a pet rock. Craft fee is $2.00.

2:00 p.m. Snookball
Bring your family and join Blackwater Falls staff members Carly and Inza on the fenced court near the Nature Center to play “billiards” or “pool” kicking the balls into the pockets instead of using a cue stick.

5:00 p.m. Elakala Trail Walk
Join the park naturalist, Paulita, and summer naturalist, Carly, on the front porch of Blackwater Lodge to walk along a portion of a root and rock strewn trail under a canopy of conifers. About 1 mile, 1 hour. YPP

8:00 p.m. Live Birds of Prey
Three Rivers Avian Center
An awesome evening program featuring live raptors native to West Virginia: owls, hawks and eagles. You’ll learn about the habitat, diet and behavior of each bird presented, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. No fee to attend. Open to the public. Event to be held outdoors on the canyon side of Blackwater Lodge weather permitting. Inclement weather moves event indoors to Conference Center and limited to first come. Three Rivers Avian Center of Brooks, WV, (www.tracwv.org) conducts this wonderful educational program at many state parks across West Virginia as an interpretive nature program. Bringing your own chair is encouraged but not required. About 1 hour. YPP

SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 2020

Nature Center Open: 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Craft of Day is Tie Dye. Visit anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to tie dye a white or black t-shirt. Craft fee is $8.00 to $10.00. Sizes limited.

10:00 a.m. West Virginia Snakes
Meet the naturalist, Paulita, for her educational program about snakes of West Virginia. About one hour. YPP

12:30 p.m. Ask the Naturalist
The naturalist will be sitting at the picnic area past the Trading Post to answer questions about the park. If you’d like to know recommended trails, park history, area interests, what birds frequent the cabin areas, etc., take this opportunity to stop and chat.

1:30 p.m. Irish Road Bowling Fun
Irish Road Bowling is primarily played in County Armagh in Northern Ireland and in County Cork in Southern Ireland. It consists of a ball made of iron and steel that is heavy enough to pick up speed, yet small enough for any person to handle. Besides the basic rules and terms, all you do is hurl this 28 oz. “bowl” with an underhand motion over a 1 to 2-mile country road and see how far it goes! Scored like golf, the fewest number of shots from the start to the finish line wins. $5.00 deposit required for bowl. Please, follow directives of Irish Road Bowling team for social distancing guidelines. Meet in the picnic area near cabin 27 just past the Trading Post entrance.

3:00 p.m. West Virginia Jeopardy
Join the summer naturalist, Carly, for this fun game of jeopardy about West Virginia. Challenge yourself, your family or others on knowledge of West Virginia. Small novelty prize to winner.

7:30 p.m. Celebrate WV!
Mick Souter American Folklore Concert
Mick Souter is West Virginia’s “Bard of Education,” a performing artist that combines songs and stories to both entertain and educate. He is a singer, songwriter and versatile in numerous instruments from banjo to dulcimer. This Happy Birthday West Virginia concert is open to the public at no cost. Mick leads the audience on a journey through music as he explores American Folklore performing on a variety of musical instruments from dulcimer to auto-harp. His enthusiasm creates an educational experience for the entire family through music, storytelling and humor. Event held outdoors on the canyon side of Blackwater Lodge weather permitting. SUNDAY, JUNE 21, 2020

Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Craft of Day – Surprise! Stop by the nature center between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to find today’s crafty thing to do. Craft fee: $2.00

11:00 a.m. Animal Yoga
Join naturalist, Carly, on the Basketball Court (former Tennis Court) by the Nature Center, for some yoga in animal poses. We’ll be stretching and going “wild” with this court fun. All ages welcome. About 1 hour, YPP

1:00 p.m. Insect Investigation
Join naturalist, Carly, to search for insects while hearing some fun information about insects. Please, wear sturdy shoes. About 1 hour, YPP

MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2020

Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Craft of Day– Wood Craft Project. Stop in anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to purchase a wood craft kit. Craft fee varies $1.00 to $12.00.

Bird Migrating Game available for families to play on the fenced court at Nature Center from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Anyone can play and everyone will learn about our migratory birds.

11:00 a.m. Raccoon Puppets
Join naturalist, Carly, to create a raccoon paper puppet and discover local wildlife and the dangers of wildlife feeding. About 1 hour, YPP.

2:00 p.m. Leaf IQ
Join naturalist, Carly, to learn how to identify trees from leaves. We’ll be doing a leaf print activity at the conclusion of program. About 1 hour. YPP

Activities planned will observe social distancing. Please honor guidance provided by park naturalist based on directives currently in place as established by the Governor.
