Getting outdoors in August at Blackwater Falls finds a variety of activities to enjoy. Unless otherwise indicated, activities are held at the nature center area.

Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

12:00 p.m. Registration Open for Geology Weekend
Activities in Blackwater Lodge Lobby or play a geology game. Anyone is welcome to attend.

1:00 p.m. Hands-on Geology
Claudette Simard, Geologist, will tell the story of the West Virginia’s very ancient history with a focus on the Blackwater Falls/Canaan Valley Area. During this hands-on workshop, we will dig into how West Virginia became the Mountain State, identify the state’s common minerals and rocks, and investigate how they weather. A short afternoon field trip will help us look at clues in the rocks and fossils in the area. Pre-registration required. Please, meet in Blackwater Lodge. Earn your Geology Patch!

7:30 p.m. “The Mountain State” presented by West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey in Blackwater Lodge is informal yet interesting. Open to the public to attend. No registration required.

Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

9:00 a.m. It’s a great Day for a Field Trip to Dolly Sods. This day-long activity is limited to 15 participants and is car caravan as we travel through Canaan Valley and up to Dolly Sods for a look at these rock and fossil clues that show how the mountains and valleys formed. Please, fill your car up with gas, pack a lunch and bring plenty of water. No transportation provided. Pre-registration required. Led by Claudette and assisted by park naturalist. Meet at Blackwater Lodge.

Alternative activity
10:00 a.m. Rockin’ It on the Trail of Geology
This hour-long program meets at Blackwater Lodge to ramble deeper into the rocks, terrain and perhaps to find fossils that make Blackwater Falls State Park. Some walking. Open to the public. No registration required. FREE and open to the public. Space is limited for the hands-on activity and field trip to Dolly Sods. Sorry, no phone reservations or email reservations on day of event.

Backyard Bugs Nature Film
Discover some amazing arthropods that might exist in your backyard with Aspen, recreation assistant. About 30 minutes. NR

Craft Time: 1:30 p.m.
Make a collage container- $1.00. Join Aspen, recreation assistant, to create collage-covered containers for storing pencils and pens.

YPP opportunity: 3:00 p.m.
Ravens – Intelligence in Flight – Join Aspen, recreation assistant, to learn about this member of the crow family that can be found in a variety of climates. About 60 minutes. NR

10:00 a.m. Interdenominational Worship Service at Pendleton Point Overlook.
Inclement weather cancels service. Please, bring own chair and please wear a mask.

Craft Time: 11:00 a.m.
Geology Craft – $2.00 Create a card to remember some geology!

Movie Time– 1:00 p.m.

Craft Time: 3:00 p.m.
Mason Jar – $5.00. Join Aspen, recreation assistant, to choose from a silver-toned or gold-toned mason jar to attach a nativity scene OR Thankful Blessed scene to the jar.

Swimming is permitted in at Pendleton Lake in the designated (Roped Off) area at own risk.
Face covering is required inside public buildings by Executive Order. Social distancing is encouraged. Thanks for staying safe. Park activities and other useful information is available at lodge, camping area and nature center.
