Getting outdoors at Blackwater Falls finds a variety of activities to enjoy. Unless otherwise indicated, activities are held at the nature center area.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 11:00 a.m.
Tracking Down Tracks – Join the summer naturalist, Carly, to explore how to identify animal footprints. Replica samples used during presentation. Afterwards, make a baggie of slime to take home.

11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Craft of the Day is All about Insects
Use colorful paint or markers on a pre-printed insect picture for FREE or use colorful paints to make a butterfly for $2.00.

Insects Nature Film – About 30 minutes. NR

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 2:00 p.m.
West Virginia Snakes! Join the summer naturalist, Carly, to hear why snakes are reptiles and other interesting facts about snakes. Also hear about snakes that call West Virginia home and perhaps meet one or two of them. About 1 hour. Afterwards paint a wooden wiggly snake for $3.00 each.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 10:00 a.m.
Beginners Bird Stroll
Join the recreation assistant, Inza, to learn the steps to begin birding and stroll around the area listening and looking for birds as we learn together. About 1 hour.

11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Craft of the Day – Log Cabin
Use wood stain and glue to make a decorative log cabin or turn it into a gingerbread house decoration for Christmas. $10.00

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 1:00 p.m.
Stream Study – Join the summer naturalist, Carly, on the front porch of Blackwater Falls Lodge, to walk to Shay Run. Carly will guide you into the water to discover what makes a stream healthy and discover some critters that live in or near the stream. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes that can get WET! About one hour.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 3:00 p.m.
Woodland Box Turtle – Join the summer naturalist, Carly, to learn about the only land turtle in West Virginia followed with a fun and interactive game for the entire family. Some walking. About one hour.

11:30 a.m. Tree Cookies Craft – Join recreation attendant, Inza, to decorate a wood slice. Craft fee: $1.00

12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Craft of the Day is Sand Art!
Use sand to “paint” a pre-designed poster. No Fee

1:00 p.m. Family Movie Afternoon

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 3:00 p.m.
Elakala Trail Walk
Join the summer naturalist, Carly, at the front entrance to Blackwater Lodge for this walk along a section of one of our most popular trails. Along the trail you will have an opportunity to view the first cascade of Elakala and a little more about the falls and some facts about nature along the walk. About one hour. One mile.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 6:00 p.m.
Campfire Stories – Join Carly and friends at the fire circle of Blackwater Falls Nature Center to hear some stories and perhaps roast a marshmallow or make another treat using a pie iron. About one hour.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 8:45 p.m.
Nightime Magic
Join the naturalists, Paulita and summer naturalist Carly, to enjoy fun nighttime activities, perhaps a little stargazing through a telescope, hearing the importance of dark skies, a little on constellations and learn how animals adapt to the world of darkness. 1-2 hours, some walking.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 8:30 a.m.
Beginners Bird Walk
Join the park naturalist, Paulita, in the Falls Overflow Parking near park intersection for this walk along the park road listening and looking for feathered friends. Binoculars helpful but not necessary. About 70 minutes.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 11:00 a.m.
Map & Compass Fun
Join the park naturalist, Paulita, to hear about a topography map, experience a short compass course and perhaps hear how they can be used together. About 1 hour, some walking. Afterwards make your own compass. Craft fee: $2.00

1:00 p.m. Experience the game of Disc Golf
Blackwater Falls staff will help and guide you through the basics. Disc golf is fun and outdoors. About 45 minutes.

Swimming is available at Pendleton Lake in designated area at your own risk.

Programs and activities begin at the Nature Center, unless indicated. Activities planned will observe social distancing. Please honor guidance provided by park naturalist based on directives currently in place as established by the Governor. Face coverings inside public buildings are required by Executive Order as of July 7, 2020. Social distancing encouraged.
