Blackwater Falls Nature Activities

Getting outdoors at Blackwater Falls finds a variety of activities to enjoy on Wednesday and Thursday. Unless otherwise indicated, activities are held at the nature center area.

Wednesday, July 29, 2020
Morning Craft of the Day– 10:30 a.m.
Decorative Mason Jar for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Craft fee: $ 5.00

Young People for Parks Opportunity 11:00 a.m.
Woodland Box Turtle
Learn about the only land turtle in West Virginia followed with a fun and interactive game for the entire family. Little Walking. About one hour.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 1:00 p.m.
Stream Study
Meet on the front porch of Blackwater Falls Lodge, to walk to Shay Run. Carly, will guide you into the water to discover what makes a stream healthy and discover some critters that live in or near the stream. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes that can get WET! About one hour.

Young People for Parks Opportunity– 2:30 p.m.
West Virginia Jeopardy
How well do you know the state of West Virginia? Find out in this fun family friendly game with Carly, summer naturalist. About thirty minutes. Lot’s of fun.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 4:00 p.m.
Elakala Trail Walk
Join the summer naturalist, Carly, at the front entrance to Blackwater Lodge for this walk along a section of one of our most popular trails. Along the trail you will have an opportunity to view the first cascade of Elakala and a little more about the falls and some facts about nature along the walk. About one hour. One mile.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 7:30 p.m.
Bust n’ Boom Campfire
Join the park naturalist, Paulita, at the fire circle of Nature Center to hear a little history of the area and perhaps roast a marshmallow or make another treat using a pie iron. About one hour.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 8:45 p.m.
Sundown Stroll to Pendleton Point
Enjoy learning about the importance of dark skies, some constellations and learn how animals adapt to the world of darkness. About one hour, some walking. Opportunity for photography.

Thursday, July 30, 2020
Craft of Day– Butterflies
Use markers or paint on wings along with a body to make your own butterfly. Craft fee $2.00

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 10:30 a.m.
Tracking Down Tracks
Join the summer naturalist, Carly, to explore how to identify animal footprints. Replica samples used during presentation. Afterwards, make a baggie of slime to take home.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 12:00 a.m.
West Virginia Snakes!
Join the park naturalist, Paulita and Carly, to hear why snakes are reptiles and other interesting facts about snakes. Also hear about snakes that call West Virginia home and perhaps meet one or two of them. About 1 hour. Afterwards paint a wooden wiggly snake for $3,00 each

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 1:00 p.m.
Tree-ific Leaves
How is your leaf identification? Join the summer naturalist, Carly, to learn how to identify trees using leaves. Afterwards create a leaf print. About 1 hour.

Young People for Parks Opportunity: 3:00 p.m.
Spruce Bog and Berries Walk
Join the park naturalist’s Paulita and Carly for this interpretive walk along a section of yellow birch trail to a mountain bog. About 70 minutes. One mile.

FRIDAY– July 31st -11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Craft of the Day is Tie Dye– tie dye a souvenir BLACK or WHITE T-shirt. Craft fee: $8.00 Youth, $10.00 Adult or $3.00 bring your own shirt. Sizes limited to first come.

Coming Up…
July 31-August 2– Natural History of Plants and Birds with Bill Beatty and Jan Ruyan. Includes– presentation about the making of Dolly Sods, Live Bird presentation by Avian Center and guided hikes into nearby areas of interest. Cost is $40.00 per person. Limited so register today.

Programs and activities begin at the Nature Center, unless indicated. Activities planned will observe social distancing. Please honor guidance provided by park naturalist based on directives currently in place as established by the Governor. Face coverings inside public buildings are required by Executive Order as of July 7, 2020. Social distancing encouraged.
