Blackwater Falls Memorial Day Weekend Activities

With summer fast approaching, Blackwater Falls nature programs and outdoor activities invite your participation. Displays and exhibits are open to the public without charge. Unless indicated, games, crafts, films are conducted or begin at the nature center which is at Pendleton Lake. Some crafts have a small fee.

Nature Center Hours: 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
10:00 a.m. Scenic Overlook Nature Stroll
Meet your trail guides at Pendleton Point Overlook by the salt sands sign for this morning stroll. This leisurely interpretive stroll around the grounds includes a spectacular view of Blackwater Canyon.
1:00 p.m. Butterflies
All about butterflies! We’ll stroll around the area looking for butterflies and perhaps some of their insect friends. About 45 minutes. YPP
1:30 p.m. Butterfly Wings Craft
We’ll color child size wings in the design of your favorite butterfly or create your own style. Craft fee: $3.00
2:30 p.m. American Black Bear
Join the park naturalist, Paulita Cousin, to learn about West Virginia’s state animal; the Black Bear and how to become bear aware. About one hour. YPP
3:30 p.m. Bear Claw Craft
Use replica claw beads to create a bear claw necklace. Craft fee: $2.00
4:30 p.m. Litter Getters
Join attendant, Brittany, to learn about litter and collect loose trash we may find in the area. Gloves and bags provided. Each participant will get to choose a prize from the prize box. YPP
7:00 p.m. Family Movie Night
Join attendant, Brittany, for this film about a lonely piglet that befriends a spider that vows to save his life. G Rated. 96 minutes.

9:00 a.m. Beginners Bird Walk
Join Blackwater Falls naturalists in the overflow/bus parking near the park intersection to stroll along park roads looking and listening for feathered friends. About 1 hour. YPP
11:00 a.m. Dig It!
Join the park naturalist Paulita Cousin for a beginner’s presentation about the geology of the park and “The Mountain State.” Participants will have an opportunity to be a paleontologist and take home their own fossil find. Craft fee: $3.00 YPP
1:00 p.m. Game Time
Let’s play Murbles! Learn the basics of playing Bocce, Murbles, Viking bowling and yard Yahtzee then challenge your family or strangers to a game. Game time!
2:30 p.m. Slithering Snakes
Park Naturalist Paulita Cousin is an entertaining interpreter. Learn about snakes found in West Virginia. Live Eastern Ratsnake highlighted during program. About 1 hour. YPP
4:00 p.m. Snipe Hunt
Oh! this can be a fun game with a hint of interpretation. The object is to be the first person/team to find the target snipe and return it to the nest. YPP
7:00 p.m. BINGO
Join in this traditional game with park bingo staff: Brittany and Kacey. Small novelty prize to winner(s).

10:00 a.m. A Squirrels guide to Success Nature Film
Join the attendant, Brittany, for this hour-long film about these cheeky nut lovers. YPP
11:00 a.m. Wiggly Squirrel Craft
Paint and glue together a wooden squirrel. Craft fee: $3.00
1:30 p.m. Bugs Nature Film
Zoom into the world of creatures that are industrious, sociable and environmentally useful, but that are nevertheless avoided and ignored. About 30 minutes. YPP
2:30 p.m. Drum Craft
Join us. Craft fee: $3.00
4:00 p.m. Skulls, Skins and Scat
Explore West Virginia animals through skulls, skins and replica scat. Also, create a deer track to take home. About 1.5 hours. YPP
7:00 p.m. Campfire and Light Pollution
Light pollution and solutions, roast marshmallows and enjoy a roaring campfire. About 1.5 hours. YPP
9:00 p.m. Nature at Night
There are many aspects of nature that occur between dusk and dawn, but many people are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with being outdoors at dark. It is fun to learn what the body does to compensate for darkness, experience heightened senses and learn about the creatures of the night. About one hour. Sorry no flashlights until instructed by naturalist. Sturdy shoes required. Not recommended for very small children. YPP

11:00 a.m. North Woods Walk
Meet at the Sled Run to explore the dark mystery of a forest. Hike along Shay Trace and Cherry Lane trails. About One mile. YPP
