Black Bear Day
NATIONAL BLACK BEAR DAY is the first Saturday in June and recognizes the most commonly found bear in North America. The Black Bear was selected as West Virginia’s official State Animal by a poll of students, teachers and sportsmen conducted by the Division of Natural Resources in 1954-1955. The scientific name is Ursus americanus.
Naturalist Paulita Cousin will present “Bear Aware” today at Blackwater Falls State Park Nature Center and Blackwater Falls Lodge. Today is also National Trails Day with Cousin leading a guided hike. Program times will post mid-April 2020.
