Birding on Blennerhassett
May 15, 2021
It’s a rare opportunity to go Birding on Blennerhassett Island in the early morning. So get your binoculars and meet the assistant superintendent Brent Baker and members of the Mountwood Bird Club on Saturday, May 15, for a guided bird walk at Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park.
This is a rare opportunity to explore the island in search of birds during the peak of spring migration with some of the most knowledgeable and experienced birders in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Participants meet at Point Park in Parkersburg, WV, at 7:45 a.m. to take the ferry to the island and will return at 11:30 a.m. Tickets for the ferry are $12/per adult $8/per child round trip. Don’t forget your camera! Please purchase tickets at Point Park, Parkersburg, WV.
This outing is open to the public. It is a great opportunity to start birdwatching with members of the Mountwood Bird Club. The fee is for the sternwheeler trip to the historic island. The activity is free to attend. Participants may linger longer on the island, however the earliest return to the mainland for birdwatchers is 11:30 a.m.
This will be a slow-paced walk on mostly level ground and established trails that will explore habitats ranging from historical walnut plantations to mature riparian forests, open fields, and early successional bottomlands. Comfortable walking/hiking shoes and insect repellent are recommended.
