West Virginia’s Birthday is June 20th! Visit Beech Fork State Park this week to celebrate the Mountain State!

Wednesday, June 17

Story Hour: “Monarch Butterfly of Aster Way” at 10:00 a.m.
Join your naturalist behind the park headquarters in the field for an interactive story hour while learning about West Virginia’s State Butterfly: the Monarch! All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend!

West Virginia Scavenger Hunt at 1:00 p.m.
This West Virginia themed scavenger hunt will have participants all over the park in search of flora and fauna that are native to the Mountain State. Meet outside the Campers Corner Store to pick up your list at 1:00 p.m. Bring a phone or camera to take pictures of your findings. The first family to return with the most items found by 2:00 p.m. will win a free one day pass to the pool!

Thursday, June 18

Anything Blue and Gold! 1:00 p.m.
Meet outside the Campers Corner Store at 1:00 p.m. ready to take off through the park and snap pictures of objects that contain WV’s colors in an hour! (Flowers, animals, the sky, etc…)! The family/individual to return with the most pictures of blue and gold objects in one hour will receive laminated West Virginia State Park bookmarks!

West Virginia Trivia at 5:00 p.m.
Meet behind the park headquarters in the field with your game face on for an evening of trivia themed around our beloved Mountain State! Questions will range from what the state animal is, WV history, its State Parks, and beyond! The winner will receive a free packaged ice cream from the Store!

Friday, June 19

Story Hour: “Golden Delicious” at 10:00 a.m.
Join your naturalist behind the park headquarters in the field to learn the fascinating story about WV’s state fruit that made its first appearance on Anderson Mullins’s farm in Clay County, West Virginia! YPP

Hike and Sketch West Virginia at 1:00 p.m.
Enjoy a walk on the Road to Nowhere while sketching an outline of West Virginia’s shape along the way! It’s a tough thing to draw (especially while walking), so the best art will receive a prize!

Furs of West Virginia at 4:00 p.m.
Meet behind the park headquarters to learn about native animals to West Virginia AND observe the pelts of four of those animals! You may touch the furs, but we will be observing proper social distancing and sanitation. YPP

Saturday, June 20: It’s West Virginia Day!

Story Hour: “The Adventures of Berkeley the Bear” at 10:00 a.m.
Berkeley is happy to live in the Monongahela Forest with his Sugar Maple friends. Meet in front of the Store to find out what Berkeley does and learn about West Virginia in this interactive story hour!

West Virginia Day Hike at 1:00 p.m.
Meet your naturalist at the campfire circle for a ½-mile hike on the Long Branch Trail! We’ll talk about West Virginia’s history, its state parks, and share some fun facts! Participants should be prepared with comfortable shoes, water, and curiosity about the Mountain State!

SPECIAL ENTERTAINMENT
Bil Lepp at 7:00 p.m.
Come to the activities room at 7:00 p.m. to meet Bil Lepp, a nationally renowned storyteller and five-time champion of the West Virginia Liars’ Competition!

Sunday, June 21

Going Fishing with Dad on Father’s Day at 9:00 a.m.
Grab your dad and fishing tackle and come to the Boat Dock for a little impromptu fishing derby prior to heading home!

Father’s Day Hike at 1:00 p.m.
Bring your dad to the campfire circle for a short ½-mile hike on the Long Branch Trail! The children (no matter how old!) will receive a questionnaire to fill out while on the hike to see how well they know their dad!

YPP: Young People for Parks is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated by the YPP logo. Participants will also complete the information on a special YPP brochure. After turning it into the park’s naturalist, each participant will receive a YPP patch. See your naturalist for the brochures and additional information.
