Autumn To-Do’s at Blackwater Falls

Autumn color is spectacular. Enjoy family friendly activities at Blackwater Falls as deciduous trees turn from green to fashionable colors. Other activities may be planned. Please check the information center at Blackwater Falls Lodge or postings at the Nature Center.

Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

11:00 a.m. On the Wings of the Monarch Film
This nature documentary takes you on a journey into the world of the monarch butterfly. About 47 minutes.

12:00 p.m. Butterfly Wings – use markers/paint to create your own cardboard butterfly wings. Craft fee: $3.00

1:00 p.m. Butterfly & Moth Nature Film
Enjoy the miraculous transformation from caterpillar to adult. About 30 minutes.

2:00 p.m. Butterfly Watercolor
Use colored plastic butterfly bodies and watercolor paint on paper wings to create your own butterfly. Craft fee; $1.00

9:00 a.m. Wild Walks (aka Walk Between the Parks)
Join Dave Vance at Canaan Valley Resort State Park for this 8-mile “walk between Blackwater Falls State Park and Canaan Valley Resort State Park.” Other activities include the “walk-a-mile” contest, alternative interpretive programs at
Blackwater Falls State Park and a fun quiz along a section of the trail. The “walk between the parks” registration fee is $25.00 per adult and $15.00 per child. This fee includes an event memento, cookout lunch at the halfway point and shuttle service from Canaan Valley Resort State Park to Blackwater Falls State Park. Pre-registration recommended on Friday at Beech Club in Canaan Valley Lodge from 12:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. For questions, contact Dave Vance at [email protected] or call 304-866-2215.

9:00 a.m. Spruce Bogs & Berries Walk
Join park naturalist, Paulita Cousin, at the Gentle Trail trailhead for a walk along a section of Yellow Birch Trail. Walk beneath a canopy of a coniferous forest to a mountain bog where cranberries thrive. About 1 mile, 70 minutes. YPP

11:00 a.m. Wooden Snake
Paint a wooden snake that wiggles with a flip of your wrist. Craft fee: $3.00

12:00 p.m. West Virginia Snakes
Join Paulita, park naturalist, for this interpretive talk about snakes that call West Virginia home, perhaps dispel some myths about snake and possibly leave the program with an appreciation of snakes. About 1 hour. Perhaps, a live Eastern Ratsnake or Eastern Milksnake highlighted during presentation. YPP

1:00 p.m. Drum Craft
Use pre-cut foam and cardboard to make a drum. Craft fee: $3.00

2:00 p.m. Movie
A girl is swept away from a farm in Kansas to a magical land in a tornado and embarks on a quest with her new friends to see the Wizard who can help her return home to Kansas and help her friends as well. Rated G. About 1 1/2 hour.

2:30 p.m. Naturalist Loop
Meet park naturalist, Paulita, on the porch of Blackwater Lodge for this walk along a section of three trails with short interpretive stops along the way. About 2 miles, about 90 +/- minutes. YPP
