Activities at Cacapon

Take advantage of activities scheduled September 1-3 at Cacapon. Participation is free and open to the public unless indicated.

SUNDAY, September 1
Nature Center Open: 9:00AM – 4:30PM

9:30AM West Virginia Morning Melodies
Meet at the Nature Center for a beginner birding hike. Binoculars Provided. (1 hour)

Cacapon State Park Homecoming Celebration
Enjoy live music, silent auction, & door prizes. Celebration will be at park gazebo & picnic area!

7:00PM Introduction to Fire Building
Learn several techniques for building a fire and try your own skill set at starting a fire
with steel & flint. (1 hour) YPP

8:00PM Cacapon Campfire Join us at the campfire circle for a marshmallow roastin’ good time! You bring the marshmallows and we will provide the sticks. WV songs & trivia. (1 hour)

MONDAY,September 2
Nature Center Open 9:00-5:00PM

10:00AM Tai Chi This class will help increase balance, flexibility, and focus on connection to mind, body, & spirit. Held at the Lodge. (1hour)

9:30AM Central Trail Hike! Meet at the nature center, then follow summer naturalist to Batt picnic parking. Enjoy the scenery from a 2 mile portion of this trail. (1.5 hours)

12:30PM What do Owl’s eat? Learn about common owls and their diet by using an owl dissection kit. (1 hour)

2:00PM Stream Study Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! Meet at Nature Center. You may want to bring shoes to get wet.

TUESDAY, September 3
Nature Center Open 9:00-5:00PM

9:30 Discovery Walk So much to discover! Use the Young People’s Series Wildlife Guide & Checklist to find birds, mammals, reptiles & amphibians! (1 hour) YPP

2:00PM WV Wildlife & Molds Join us in learning about WV wildlife, looking at pelts, skulls, tracts & scat. Join us for this drop in style program from 12-1PM.

Young People for Parks (YPP) is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated on the weekly program by the YPP logo. Participants will also complete the information on a special YPP brochure. After turning it into the park’s naturalist, each participant will receive a state park incentive for participating in three specified programs. All ages are welcome!

Explorer Packs
Your Child’s Guide to the Outdoors! The Potomac Valley Audubon Society & Mark West explorer packs are available for a day or two use, free of charge, from the Nature Center. Pack’s are filled with field guides, binoculars and activities to entertain!
