Activities at Cacapon

Peak monarch migration is occurring at Cacapon through September 26. Join us for nature-based activities. Activities are free to attend and held at or begin from Cacapon Nature Center unless indicated.

FRIDAY, September 20

11:00 a.m. West Virginia Tree ID Walk
Learn how to identify common WV trees on this walk.

1:00 p.m. Monarch Survey
Join the park naturalist for a monarch butterfly count. Meet at the nature center then drive to the parks’ pollinator fields. Great areas to view monarch butterflies are the park’s pollinator fields or native plants at the nature center.

SATURDAY, September 21

11:00 a.m. & 2:00 p.m. Monarch in the Meadow Tour
Meet at the Nature Center, then drive to the parks’ pollinator fields to look for the migrating monarchs!

SUNDAY, September 22

9:30 a.m. West Virginia Morning Melodies
Meet at the Nature Center for a beginner birding hike. Binoculars Provided. (1 hour)

11:00 a.m. Magnificent Monarchs
Look for a monarch chrysalis in the native wildflower garden at the nature center.

MONDAY, September 23

Tai Chi
This class at 10:00 a.m. will help increase balance, flexibility, and focus on connection to mind, body, & spirit. Held at the Lodge. (1 hour)

WEDNESDAY, September 25

11:00 a.m. WV Tree ID Walk
Learn to identify common WV trees on short walk. Craft of leaf pounding to follow. (1 hour)

1:00 p.m. Monarch Survey
Join the park naturalist for a monarch butterfly count. Meet at the nature center then drive to the parks’ pollinator fields.

THURSDAY, September 26

11:00 a.m. Monarch in the Meadow Walk
Let’s take a monarch count as we walk the perimeter of one of the parks’ wildflower fields.

1:30 p.m. Monarch Milkweed
Take a look around the native wildflower garden at the nature center to find a monarch chrysalis.

FRIDAY, September 27

11:00 a.m. WV Trees
Paw Paw trees are a native tree to WV. Learn about the paw paw fruit and take a short hike.

7:30 p.m. Snakes Alive. Special Guest Biologist Jim Fregonara
Enjoy this free educational program by Jim Fregonara, WV DNR Biologist. Learn about a variety of snakes and see some up-close!

SATURDAY, September 28

10:30 a.m. Native Plants
Discover native plants that help our pollinators at the nature center.

1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Cacapon Mountain Overlook
Meet the naturalist at the overlook to take in a grand view of four states: WV, VA, PA, & MD.

6:30 p.m. Evening Stroll
Meet WV Master Naturalist and park volunteer at the Lodge for an evening hike. Wrap up your day with a walk close to sunset to take in the views and twilight sounds of Cacapon. (1 hour)

SUNDAY, September 29

Nature Center 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

MONDAY, September 30

10:00 a.m. Tai Chi

Young People for Parks (YPP) is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated on the weekly program by the YPP logo. Participants will also complete the information on a special YPP brochure. After turning it in to the park’s naturalist, each participant will receive a state park incentive for participating in three specified programs. All ages are welcome!

Your Child’s Guide to the Outdoors! The Potomac Valley Audubon Society & Mark West explorer packs are available for a day or two use, free of charge, from the Nature Center. Packs are filled with field guides, binoculars and activities to entertain!
