Activities at Blackwater Falls

As autumn colors change a deciduous forest, enjoy these nature based activities at Blackwater Falls State Park.

FRIDAY, October 8, 2021
The Nature Center is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All Activities meet at the Nature Center unless otherwise noted.

11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Twisted T-Shirt Fun with attendant .
Sizes limited. Adult sizes $10.00, youth sizes $8.00.

10:00 a.m.
FBI Walk
Join the seasonal naturalist, Madelene, for this kid friendly walk in search of “criminal activity” within the natural world. What animal has committed a crime? About one hour. Some walking. YPP.

11:30 a.m.
Friendship bracelet Craft
Use floss to weave/braid together to form a pattern for a bracelet. Due to difficulty of craft we do not recommended for young children. Free craft.

3:00 p.m.
WonderFALL Hike
Join the naturalist’s to walk along a section of three trails to Pendleton Point and back to earn the beautiful wonderfall hiking patch. About 1.5 miles, 90 minutes. YPP

The Nature Center is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. All Activities meet at the Nature Center unless otherwise noted.

10:00 a.m.
Tie Dye an Orb
Use acrylic paint to create a tie dye glass orb or paint a swirled ceramic ornament.

11:30 a.m.
Silly Stone Craft
Use acrylic paint, wiggly eyes and more to create a silly pet rock. Craft fee: $2.00

1:30 p.m.
WonderFALL Pase Point Hike
Join the park naturalist’s, Paulita and Madelene, to hike a trail that borders the Monongahela National Forest to an unrestricted rock outcropping with a spectacular view of Blackwater Canyon while earning the beautiful wonderFALL hiking patch. . Trail is Intermediate with short but steep inclines. About 3 miles, 2 hours. Sturdy shoes mandatory. Recommend carrying bottled water and snacks. YPP

5:00 p.m.
Snakes of West Virginia
Join the naturalist to hear about snakes of West Virginia and meet some of our nature
center resident snakes. About 1 hour. YPP

7:30 p.m.
Shining Light on the Darkness
Join the naturalist’s: Paulita and Madelene, for this nighttime fun. There is many aspects of nature that occur between dusk and dawn but many people are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with being outdoors at night. Enjoy some fun nighttime activities that explore our senses and enjoy some stargazing opportunities. Little walking. Activity is outdoors so dress accordingly. Inclement weather cancels this activity. Please, leave the flashlight off during the program. About 1 hour. YPP

Silent Hike
Join this silent yet thoughtful and fun adventure along a section of Dobbin House Trail. This is an out and back walk. About 1 mile, 1 hour. YPP

11:00 a.m.
Kids Nature Film and Finger-painting
Let’s watch a film about a worried scarecrow in a pumpkin patch as he watches animals prepare for winter while painting with your fingers. YPP

12:00 p.m.
Leaf Suncatcher Craft-with naturalist.
Craft fee: $2.00

1:00 p.m.
Jewelry Making Craft
Craft fee up to $2-$5

2:30 p.m.
The Box Turtle
Box turtles are awesome. Hear about box turtles, why they should not be pets, and make a fun craft and perhaps play an interactive game. About 1 hour. YPP
