A weekend of Nature-based programs

Nature-based and outdoor activities planned at Blackwater Falls State Park typically begin at the nature center and are free to attend, unless indicated. With autumn approaching, enjoy getting outdoors. This weekend has a focus on bees and exploration.

FRIDAY, August 27, 2021
Nature Center Hours today are from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

10:00 a.m. Family Movie
Brittany is your film host that shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. About 1.5 hours. Rated PG

11:00 a.m. FBI Hike
Paulita Cousin, Park Naturalist, is looking for some nature detectives to help her discover the culprits of nature. This is a kid (and adult) friendly detective walk where you search for evidence of “criminal activity” within our natural world. About 1 hour, some walking. YPP

1:30 p.m. Spark the Fire
The park naturalist is a fire starter. Join her for a demonstration making char cloth and then try your hand at creating a fire with flint and steel. You can do it! We may sing classic campfire songs and roast marshmallows. About 1 hour. Open to any age. Come give fire-starting a try. YPP

SATURDAY, August 28, 2021
Nature Center Hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Visit the exhibits. Ask questions about the park and what animals, flowers and trees you might see. Learn more about bees at the afternoon programs.

10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Blackwater Falls Tie Dye Fun!
Brittany is your tie dye instructor and activity host. Get creative with a colored Blackwater Falls T-shirt in black or Purple OR Blackwater Falls white T-Shirt and colored dye. Sizes limited. Adults size : $10.00, Youth size: $8.00

11:00 a.m. Native Bees
Learn about mason bees while creating a mason bee house. Park Naturalist Paulita Cousin is your host. About 30 minutes. Craft fee: $3.00. YPP

12:00 p.m. A Light from a Yesterday Craft
The park’s naturalist invited you to her program about honeybees. And you can create your own beeswax candle or a “save the bees” bracelet. Supplies limited to first come basis. About 30 minutes. Craft fee: $2.00. YPP

1:30 p.m. Family Movie
It’s a comedy film about an ambitious young worker bee that soars out into the world with high fling pollen jocks in search of nectar and adventure. He learns that even a little bee can make a difference when he breaks the rule. About 1.5 hours. Rated PG
