8-mile Hike Between the Parks
October 5, 2018 @ 9:01 pm
A special day for hiking is today! It’s an 8-mile hike at the beginning of autumn’s glory. A special guided hike between Blackwater Falls and Canaan Valley Resort state parks begins at 9:00 a.m. and concludes around 3:00 p.m. Hikers must preregister and there is a minimal fee.
Walkers pass through groves of red spruce and eastern hemlock, as well as dense rhododendron thickets. A cookout lunch is included at the halfway point, as well as shuttle service. This walk is not recommended for smaller children. The walk is a moderately strenuous activity with elevation changes up to 600 feet. Bring water and snacks. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing. To register for this hike, call Canaan Valley Resort at 304-866-4121 extension 2678 or extension 2788. The hike is a cooperative hike with both state parks assisting.
Other planned activities at Blackwater Falls are a Light Pollution and Dark Skies program at 9:30 a.m., a Make Your Own Tie-Dye T-shirt (fee based), a Tree ID program, making a Christmas ornament class, “Bear Aware” program, bracelet crafts and a bear’s life game. (A bear’s life game is an all-family adventure.) Activities are at the nature center.
