59th Annual Wildflower Pilgrimage

The Wildflower Pilgrimage at Blackwater Falls is a special weekend organized and conducted by the West Virginia Garden Club, Inc., and is co-sponsored by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

Discover a weekend of birding and wildflower identification at Blackwater Falls State Park in Davis, West Virginia, a birder and wildflower enthusiasts’ paradise where your passion for nature can be shared. With a variety of workshops and tours led by the best in the field, prepare to enjoy a weekend of nature programs at their best. This event is fee-based, and preregistration is required in advance.

Pilgrimage features include:
Thursday, May 7 is an afternoon beginner’s wildflower workshop, a beginning birding workshop, and park tour. Evening program speaker is Melissa McCormick of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and Rob Whetsell, Randolph County Historian.

Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9, are “One Tour a Day’ opportunities with tours departing at staggered times. Tours and motorcades depart from Blackwater Falls Lodge and are limited to ten cars. Travel is by personal vehicle.

Friday tours include: All Birding Tour; Germany Valley; Dolly Sods Wilderness Hike: Edge of the World Trail; Cransville Swamp; Rainshadow and Shale Barrens; Canaan Loop to Table Rock; Wildflowers, Breeding Birds and Vernal Pools: Fernow Forest; Jenningston-Gladwin; Black Fork: Ferns, Ephemerals and Avidauna; Wildflower Identification Workshop; Mosses Extravaganza and Aurora Project at Cathedral State Park; and Red Creek Trail for Wildflowers and Birds.

Saturday tours include: Sparrows of West Virginia; Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge Hike; Gaudineer Knob; Coberly Sods Hike; Dolly Sods Driving Tours; Fernow Forest; Otter Creek Wilderness Hike; Lower Glady Fork Trail; Canaan Loop; Moon Rocks, Hoo Doo Rocks, Yellow Cree; Yellow Birch and Blackwater River Trials; Jenningston-Gladwin; Canaan National Wildlife Refuge: The North Tract; Plants & Birds: Floor to Ceiling; Blackwater Falls/Canaan Valley Geology Workshop a& Field Trip

Registration fee includes access to workshop, evening programs and one Friday and one Saturday tour, as well as a commemorative 2020 Wildflower Pilgrimage Tile. Activities and lodging rates are inclusive and dependent upon number of participants.
