31st Annual Astronomy Weekend & More at Blackwater Falls

Since 1987, the dark skies at Blackwater Falls State Park have welcomed the Kanawha Valley Astronomical Society. This group hosts an amazing astronomy weekend that is open to the public. Visitors may observe the striking beauty of the night sky often displaying the Milky Way from horizon to horizon due to incredibly dark skies. Astronomers, astrophotographers, and individuals fascinated with constellations are welcomed. Bring the family or come alone to enjoy a treasured resource—dark skies!

Craft Opportunity: 10:00 a.m. Mason Jar
Use a nativity stencil or Thanksgiving themed stencil to decorate a silver tones or gold toned mason jar. Craft Fee: $5.00

Young People for Parks Opportunity 11:00 a.m.
American Black Bear
Do you know what to do in a surprise encounter with a Black Bear? Is your pet dog a deterrent for a Black Bear? Black Bears are a very exciting species and understanding them is important to their safety as well as yours. Join the park naturalist, Paulita, for this presentation about Black Bears and how to interface with them in a positive manner.

On the Wings of the Monarch Film
This nature documentary takes you on a journey into the world of the monarch butterfly. About 47 minutes.

Craft Opportunity 11:00 a.m.*
Butterfly House
Assemble and paint a pre-cut butterfly house. Craft fee: $2.00 or $12.00 depending on selected craft.

Craft time 1:00 p.m. *
Butterfly Wings
Use markers/paint to create your own cardboard butterfly wings. Craft fee: $3.00

Young People for Parks Opportunity 1:30 p.m.*
Monarch Butterfly – Join the park naturalist, Paulita, for a short introduction to our state butterfly.

Craft Opportunity 2:30 p.m.*
Wooden Snake
Join Aspen, recreation assistant, to paint a wooden snake that wiggles with a flip of your wrist. Craft fee: $3.00

Young People for Parks Opportunity 3:00p.m. *
West Virginia Snakes
Join Paulita, park naturalist, for this interpretive talk about the snakes that call West Virginia home, perhaps dispel some myths about snakes and leave the program with an appreciation of snakes. About 1 hour. Perhaps, a live eastern ratsnake or eastern milksnake highlighted during presentation.

Young People for Parks Opportunity 5:00 p.m.
Balsam Fir Trail Walk
Join Paulita, park naturalist, for this interpretive walk along one of our park trails. About 90 minutes. 1 1/2 mile.

Worship Service– 10:00 a.m.
Join Pastor Ruth Bullwinkle at Pendleton Point Overlook for this morning’s interdenominational worship service. Please, bring something to sit upon and face mask required. Inclement weather cancels this service. About 30 minutes.

Craft Opportunity 11:00 a.m.– 1:00 p.m.*
Tie Dye!
Join recreation assistants, Aspen and Brittany, to make your own black or white tie dye souvenir shirt. Supplies are limited! Youth size is $8.00 and adult size is $10.00.

Movie Time– 3:00 p.m.*
Join Aspen, recreation assistant, for this film about a tale of friendship and adventure between a spider and a pig. Rated G.

Young People for Parks Program (YPP)
Program listed as YPP is open to all ages but qualifies to meet the youth requirements to earn the YPP patch. To Earn the patch –you must be age 6-16 years, attend three of the Blackwater Falls State Park activities listed as YPP qualified, complete the brochure and meet with us at the Nature Center to retrieve your patch.
