In need of a rejuvenating getaway to cure your winter blues? Tucked into the secluded hills of Wyoming County in Southern West Virginia, you’ll find a magical winter retreat where snow-covered trails wind through towering trees to reveal a hidden gem… two hidden gems, specifically. The two waterfalls that lend their name to Twin Falls Resort State Park are a must-see in winter.
Stunning Cascades
You can reach Marsh Fork Falls and Black Fork Falls via the Falls Trail loop, a moderate hike over one mile of rolling terrain. The falls are best viewed during rainy seasons or in winter when temperatures drop and they are transformed into a glistening curtain of ice.
Plan a winter hike when snow blankets the trees and cushions your steps as you make your way through the peaceful forest to these “twins,” which are formed on two separate tributaries that join Cabin Creek. The 20-foot narrow cascade of Black Fork Falls plunges over a recessed area of rock. The 15-foot Marsh Fork Falls is wider and just a short hike from the parking lot.
Marsh Fork and Black Fork are part of the West Virginia Waterfall Trail. Before you set out on your hike, download your free mobile passport. Check-in with your phone to log your visit. As you visit more waterfalls throughout the state, each check-in will move you closer to earning a prize, including a WV Waterfall Trail sticker, water bottle, t-shirt or limited edition print. Invite friends and family to hunt waterfalls with you as you trek through the hills and hollers of Almost Heaven.
Extend Your Stay
Once you see Twin Falls, you won’t want to leave. Book a cozy cabin or a lodge room to give yourself time to enjoy the beauty of nature and explore the great outdoors. The secluded cabins are equipped with all the comforts of home, and guests also have access to the lodge’s indoor pool, hot tub and fitness center.
Fuel up for your outdoor adventures with a delicious meal at the lodge restaurant, which is open year-round for breakfast, lunch and dinner. More than 25 miles of trails for hiking and biking wind throughout this wooded wonderland, revealing unique rock formations and clear mountain streams.
Travel back in time with a visit to the Pioneer Farm, a working farm that offers visitors a glimpse of what life was like on the frontier.
