The fun in Almost Heaven doesn’t have to end when the sun goes down. Try stargazing at Watoga State Park, a nationally-recognized Dark Sky Park. Watoga is a hotspot for avid astronomers wanting to get a great scope at the Milky Way Galaxy, meteor showers and constellations. Take a blanket and a telescope to look at the stars above with friends and family.

For a perfect historic and immersive adventure, hop on the old steam locomotive at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Cass is home to the largest fleet of operational Shay locomotives in the world. These historic beauties travel three different routes including one that takes you to Bald Knob Summit. Take the family to the station and book a train ride, take part in a magical journey up and down the mountain.

To reel in your best catch of the summer, head to Tygart Lake State Park. Venture into 1,750-acres of crisp, shimmering waters to reel-in your next bite. The lake is home to many wonderful species of fish, including largemouth bass, walleye, channel catfish and muskellunge. This makes the lake a must-see spot for anyone fond of fishing.

Take to the waters for some relaxing rowing at Beech Fork State Park. Bring your own or rent one on-site, there are options for everyone to traverse the waters. With two launch ramps and access to a designated water trail to follow, hop onto your vessel to sail blissfully across the waters.

Take a dip into the waters of Audra State Park, with crystal-clear waters of the Middle Fork River flowing peacefully around you. The flat rock beach is a very popular spot for guests and tourists to relax in the cool waters. Cool off, pack a lunch, and soak up the rest of the summer sun.

Did you know you can scuba dive in West Virginia? At Summersville Lake State Park, known as “Little Bahamas of the East” incredible visibility makes it very easy to dive in and spot life below the surface. If you go at the right time, you can even spot the Freshwater Jellyfish, among other species.

Who doesn’t love a beautiful day on the greens? Cacapon Golf Club located in Cacapon Resort State Park has a phenomenal 18-hole, 72 par course with a total 6,827 yards in immaculate condition. The course is equipped with a pro shop, dining at the Getty’s Grill and accessibility for everyone. Be sure to make a reservation before summer spots book up.
🚲 Biking
Featuring over 20-miles of world class, flat, long-distance trails in North Bend State Park, this West Virginia destination is popular for anyone wanting to explore nature on 2 wheels. The trail crosses 36 bridges and through 10 tunnels, which includes the fabled Silver Run Tunnel. You can bring your own bike to the trails, or rent one at the park. There are different trails with their own difficulty, so pick the perfect one for your journey.

Take a dip in one of the historic mineral baths in Berkeley Springs State Park. Keeping a consistent 74.3 degrees all year round, it is widely considered America’s First Spa. The wading pools run completely free all year long for everyone. While you are there, make sure to visit George Washington’s Bathtub, which is heard to have been used by the first president himself.

Take to the skies above the Pipestem Resort State Park with the Pipestem Aerial Tram. The fully motorized, state-of-the-art gondola transports visitors 1,200 feet above the scenic Bluestone Ridge Gorge. The ride takes 5 to 6 minutes and covers over 3.400 feet of cable, featuring a panoramic view of the Appalachian wilderness.

Located within Pipestem Resort State Park, just a short drive to McKeever Lodge are the Pipestem Stables for horseback riding. The stables offer sessions for both beginners and experts alike. Starting at $30 per guest, riding sessions have 30 minute, 1 hour and 2 hours duration. For the younger audience, the stables also offer ring pony rides.
